Why is the Gray Lady Scaring Everybody?

Regulations, pilot training, redundancy in equipment and systems, and technology have all optimized for safety in civil aviation.
When pilots come to work one of the first things they check are NOTAMs, Notice to Airmen issued by the FAA about changes in conditions in the National Airspace System. These could be anything from airspace restrictions around rocket launch sites, ATC outages, or runway closures. These NOTAMs are issued every day and they’re always time limited.
This week the Gray Lady— New York Times— reported (behind a paywall, but it went viral) that FAA NOTAMS advised pilots to use caution for the next 60 days flying over the Eastern Pacific, south of the US border. Guess what? Pilots always use caution. That’s literally their job, to keep us safe. If you fly regularly, you already trust pilots to get you to your destination safely. That won’t change, it just may take a little longer with new flight paths.
What does this mean for you? Nothing, unless your flight is cancelled. If pilots have to take longer routes, your arrival times may change. But planes will still fly, millions of people will still travel, and short of another global pandemic or World War III, nobody’s getting grounded. Another reason to BUY INSURANCE for your international travel.
Some Pointers on Points

How much is an airline point worth? It varies by carrier, but in general 100,000 points is worth about $2,000 this year, according to The Points Guy. If you’re thinking about buying a plane ticket, compare the dollar cost to the miles you’d have to spend and see if you’d be better off using miles. BUT, and this is a big BUT. Try to book the miles through airline partners, not through United, American, or Delta.
Here’s how The Points Guy says you can do it (thank you, Chat GPT!)
Search for Award Space: Use your primary airline's website (e.g., United.com) or partner sites (e.g., Aeroplan, BA.com) to find available seats for redemption (saver-level is key).
Transfer Points: If using transferable points (like Chase Ultimate Rewards), transfer them to an airline partner's loyalty program (e.g., Chase to British Airways) at a 1:1 ratio (often).
Book Directly: Once you find award space, book the ticket either on the partner airline's site or via your own loyalty program's portal, depending on availability and ease.
TPG's Key Tips
Flexibility is Key: Partner bookings require searching across different sites and programs; don't rely on just one.
Monitor Reservations: Partner bookings can be prone to issues, so watch for schedule changes.
Airport Pickups Worldwide

Nothing better than arriving at a foreign airport and seeing your name on a sign held by your own driver.
Bless the travel expert in our network who recommended this global airport pickup and drop-off service to us. The platform contracts with local rideshare drivers and taxi companies so their network is huge. I used them in Athens last year and plan to use them wherever I don’t have another pre-arranged ride. They operate in the US and Canada as well. Not the cheapest, but so far, reliable.
Rental Car Hack

We’ve rented vans from Turo for our domestic trips and most of the time they’re as advertised. Sometimes we have to do a little bit of cleanup before we pick up our travelers, though. We learned the hard way, caveat emptor, even when the reviews are really good. They can be super flexible and sometimes they will drop off a car to your hotel, too. Have you had experience with Turo? Do you have any other car rental hacks, beside never rent a car from the airport location? (They always include extra fees…I’ve saved hundreds of dollars renting from the Hertz on La Brea vs. LAX.)
Enjoy the journey!
