Travel Tips Tuesdays: Fly for Less

Local dining customs

Travel news for our favorite travelers.

Greetings, Travel Tip-Seekers!

Here are this week’s tips curated for you from our reliable sources in the travel industry and from general interest newsletters, websites, and publications.

International Flights from the US Getting Cheaper

Get away for less, while it lasts!

The bad news: tourism to the US is way down. The good news: the airlines have noticed, and now even domestic airfares are the lowest we’ve seen in a while. Our friends at CNBC are tracking it, and you can read about it here.

Speaking of Cheap Flights…

Some of you may have downloaded the Going app after we wrote about it a few months ago. Last week they showed a “mistake fare” to London, business class, for $1,100 roundtrip from Austin. There’s also an app called Daily Drop (HT NextTribe Trip Leader Vanessa Sinclair). But have you tried putting a prompt into ChatGPT or Gemini? Wow. Example: “I’m traveling to Ecuador March 1-9, 2026. I want to fly from (your city) to Quito roundtrip in premium economy. I don’t want to leave before 8am or arrive after 8PM. Show me the best flights in terms of connection time, and the lowest fares.” You can continue the “conversation” until you see what you want, then book it with the airline directly. For the best results, make your prompts very specific, and keep asking questions until you’re satisfied. Lifechanging!

What’s Good for the Goose

Shopping for air tickets you may have noticed an airline offers you a lower price if you use a private browser. This has happened to me, and I know it happens to other users of Apple products. Airlines must think if we can afford a Mac, we can afford to pay a few dollars more. Now Delta is using ai to take it a step further. They’re not just dynamically pricing airfares in general based on the number of seats sold. They might offer you a higher-priced ticket based on your digital footprint. Your data is out there everywhere—your socials, home ownership vs. renting, what kind of car you drive, your search history. Some data companies offer to sell as many as 1,700 data points on a single customer! I’m not even sure using a private browser would bypass Delta’s strategy because they probably have our IP addresses. So good luck out there. And maybe try a different airline.

Travelers Really Want Humans at the Front Desk!

All this new technology is great, but what happened to hospitality at hotels? A South Florida LaQuinta really FAFO’d with this one. The traveler shared the dystopian experience on TikTok and you can imagine the blowback. Ouch.

Tummy Troubles While Traveling

Toilet stories 2x in one month? Jeez.

Yes, it happens overseas more often, but sh*t happens even on domestic trips! Prevention is the key. The Guardian reports there are ways to prepare yourself.

Don’t be THAT Traveler, Please!

They may smile at you, but they’re thinking this!

When I lived in Korea I didn’t eat fast enough. You read that right. And I didn’t slurp my soup, which would have been a compliment to the chef! As a thoughtful traveler, it’s up to you to learn and adapt to local dining customs, not the other way around. You’re paying for a new experience and sometimes that means familiar dining habits stay at home. They’ll be there when you get back. Your experience outside your comfort zone will make you more resilient, and give you plenty to talk about when you get back, e.g. “Can you believe I couldn’t get a to-go coffee at that trattoria?”
