Travel Tips Tuesdays: Awe is Everywhere

And you might miss it if you're looking at your phone!

Travel news for our favorite travelers.

Greetings, Travel Tip-Seekers!

Here are this week’s tips curated for you from our reliable sources in the travel industry and from general interest newsletters, websites, and publications.

What’s Up with All the Airline Tech Problems?

Staff shortages in control towers aren’t the only issue.

I booked my flight to Morocco through Newark before they had all those tech problems earlier this year. Yes, sometimes if I see a good price, I jump on it super early, but lately I’ve been wondering if I should reroute. As with all air travel these days, there are no guarantees. The best advice in this article? Always have a “plan B.”

Primo Ultra Luxury Luggage

$3,450. You read that right. And it’s a carryon.

I swear, in certain airports (JFK, LAX, Hong Kong, Doha), there’s a higher percentage of travelers with luxury logos all over their carry-ons. Lately the tech bros have been seen rolling these German-engineered leather, polycarbonate, or aluminum suitcases around ATX. The company, Rimowa, has been around for over a hundred years, and the price will set you back as much as a plane ticket to Europe, but hey, they’re guaranteed for life!

Thinking of Traveling to the Gulf Countries?

Starting early next year, the Gulf Cooperation Council of countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE) will launch a single, unified visa application that can be purchased online ahead of your trip. It’s modeled after the European Schengen visa that allows freedom of movement among EU countries, and the GCC hopes it will encourage travelers to stay longer, see more, and, of course, spend more!

Put That Camera Down!

Yet somehow this photo was captured. Must’ve been a rude tourist.

Here are 8 places in the world where cameras are not welcome. There are probably others but if you go to any of these you have to just remember what you saw. Or bring a sketchpad!

And While We’re On the Subject of Photos…

Everybody does it. Including me!

Have you noticed it’s getting harder and harder to take candid group photos without someone in the shot being on their phone? This happened to me in Africa. AFRICA! Of course we all use our phones to capture images we want to remember and share with people back home.

But damn, it’s time we all took a breath and learned to experience what we’re seeing. We (including me) need to take more “mind pictures.” Be present. Breathe. Soak it all in. And if there are 11 other women traveling with you, you can be sure at least one of them will have gotten video of, oh, I don’t know, a baboon just lying on a tree branch, pleasuring himself. Priceless. I guarantee a “mind picture” of that will last a lifetime!

Travel is Wonder-Full.

The Nomadic School of Wonder, the co-creators of our upcoming trip to Hydra, Greece, are experts in “experience design.” We’ve learned so much from them about the neuroscience behind the experience of awe and wonder. This article is adapted from one of my favorite books on the subject: “Awe: The New Science of Wonder and How it Can Transform Your Life.” You can experience awe close to home if you learn the skill of “extreme noticing.” On a trip, though, it happens all the time. Travel can rekindle that sense of wonder and imagination you had as a child, when every day brought a new discovery. Magical!

Enjoy the journey!
