Travel news for our favorite travelers.

Greetings, Travel Tip-Seekers!

Here are this week’s tips curated for you from our reliable sources in the travel industry and from general interest newsletters, websites, and publications.

Calling All Fans of Frida Kahlo

I’m leaving my heart behind again today as I leave Mexico, but here’s another reason to return. The new Museo Casa Kahlo. The experience is less about her art and more about her family background and her life, including her years with Diego Rivera. Frida was disabled, bisexual, mixed race (mestiza) and unapologetic in her art. A bold woman ahead of her time whose art has been described as fearless and timeless. And it’s deeply rooted in Mexican history and cultre.

Enough Already with this Shutdown

Airports aren’t the only public services affected by the shutdown. In addition to the tens of thousands of public workers not getting paid and food banks being overwhelmed, your favorite national parks are getting trashed. Literally. Trash cans are overflowing at many of the most scenic spots in the US during one the most heavily traveled times of year. At least train service on Amtrak is still running and Smithsonian Museums are still open. But dang! We’re all getting tired of this.

Fast Exit from the Aisle Seat

I love to pick middle seats because I’m a chatty Cathy. If the person on window doesn’t want to talk to me, there’s the one in the aisle seat! Yes, I’m THAT person. (Everyone else on staff groans when I tell them this about myself.) But whenever I get assigned an aisle seat it’s always been such a pain getting out…until now. Check out this video. Game changer!

Great Wine: No Passport Required from the U. S.

You don’t need to go to Portugal for beautiful wineries, but we hope you will in September 2026.

It seems every state in the lower 48 is getting onboard the wine train. Even Louisiana! Texas likes to brag about its wine country but I haven’t tried many from the Lone Star State that I’d recommend. Of course we know that there are some really great wines on the West Coast that are every bit as good as any you could try in France or Italy.

By the way, last night at dinner in San Miguel de Allende we had one of my favorite Mexican wines: a Laberinto Sauvignon Blanc from San Luis Potosí. Light, crisp and very reasonably priced. I can’t find it in Texas but if you like a good sauv and you can find it, you won’t be disappointed. P.S. I added this tip today in honor of one of our travelers, who works for a wine non-profit in Washington! Looking at you, Laura!

Where and How to Retire Overseas

Our travelers in Greece last month. I think many would have opted to stay.

Original Jeannie texted me about this website earlier today. International Living gives you all kinds of advice about finding a place to retire abroad that best suits you and your budget—from Provence to Panama. Also, they tell you where to get the most affordable golden visa in Europe (Greece) and how to spend 35 days in Europe and get a passport (I still don’t understand that one, but it’s worth investigating if you’re looking to become an EU citizen.)

Two One-Ways vs. Round Trip: Tips from a Reader

NextTribe member Leslie Garcia responded to our last newsletter with this helpful tip. “Using the airline’s app will also show lower prices and deals that you will not see on their websites. Only in the app—even for same exact flight!” She also checks several APPs - different airlines to check partner airline’s price- for exact same flights prices. “They are very often different.” Love this tip! Thank you, Leslie.

Enjoy the journey!
