NextTribe Articles: Never Worry About Speaking Another Language Again?

Plus, trying to thrive through uncertainty.

A few years ago, we did a story about thriving through uncertainty.

Both of us need to study it thoroughly, or maybe get a PhD in the subject. Jeannie Edmunds is in the process of moving permanently to Austin—rather than splitting her time between L.A. and the capital of the Lone Star State. She and her husband have bought a new house south of the river, and their things are probably on a highway crossing Death Valley right now—if they’re lucky. She can’t believe the luck that’s brought her back to the city she loves most in the world, but knows there will be a sense of discombobulation until they get settled.

Jeannie Ralston, on the other hand, has no idea when she can return to her home in Asheville. She’s not exactly homeless, but with Asheville’s water treatment plant in disrepair, her house has no water, cell service, or Internet and she’s grateful she has family nearby in Tennessee, where she can camp out at least until she heads to Peru with a NextTribe group to hike the Inca Trail.

This week she was working outside a restaurant that was sharing their satellite Internet (as well as giving out free dinners). She talked to many of her neighbors and said it was incredibly heartwarming to see everyone pulling together to exchange resources and tips.

We are heartbroken that we had to reschedule our October trip to Asheville, but we know that by this spring the local artists, restaurants, and hotels will be so happy to have us in town, supporting the local economy.

Meanwhile, enjoy this week’s reads!

And a new story that came in from one of our beloved writers, Sherry Atmanstein, just in time for the Rosh Hashanah. Sherry said it felt so timely with the start of the high holidays.

Happy trails!
