This is one reason our visit to San Miguel de Allende over the Day of the Dead festival is perfectly aligned with our vibe. This is our signature trip, which we’ve been hosting for nine years.

Most of us are contemplating mortality more seriously—our own and of our loved ones. This festival offers a new way of thinking about death that can be uplifting, rather than morbid. One woman came on our trip in 2019 because her brother had received a terminal cancer diagnosis, and she was looking for a way to prepare for his death. She left with a whole new perspective.
This beautiful city came to life for the Dia de los Muertos celebration. The culture, the Mexican people, the fantastic food and places we visited combined to provide a truly unique experience. NextTribe provides exactly the kind soul nurturing enrichment I seek when I visit a new place.

A Little Taste of the Journey

The week opens with a welcome dinner right next to the iconic Parroquia church—the lights of the crown-like steeples casting a warm glow on you and your tablemates, the ringing of the bells reminding you you’re not in Kansas (or Texas, or Minnesota…) any longer. One of NextTribe’s friends—a lovely woman our age who has spent her life in San Miguel—will lead you on a guided walk of the historic center, telling you stories of growing up in this magical city.
We’ll head beyond the city enter to Atotonilco's ornate UNESCO-listed church and a folk art gallery, capped by an afternoon at a private luxury hot spring spa, then out to a private charro ranch for a uniquely San Miguel experience and lunch.
Midweek turns toward the trip's emotional core: a morning with local artisans, then building a communal altar at the hotel and gathering over wine to share memories of loved ones who've passed.
We bring in the best face painters so you can truly get in the spirit.
That leads into the Day of the Dead centerpiece — touring shrines in homes and public spaces, walking through the cemetery to see decorated graves and live music, getting faces painted for the Catrina Parade.
Marching in the parade along with bands, floats, dancers and oversized, paper mache mojinangas feels like a dream, and that feeling continues to the kick-ass party at the Rosewood Hotel, featuring dinner, open bar, and dancing, dancing, dancing.
The trip winds down with a sculpting class at La Fábrica Aurora gallery, a free afternoon to explore or relax, and a farewell dinner at one of the city's top restaurants, where we celebrate our new-found outlook on life and the precious connections we made to each other and a spectacular culture.
