Plus a legit way to bring a water bottle through TSA

Travel news for our favorite travelers.

Bom dîa from Portugal, my friends!

After a wonderful first week in Lisbon and the wine country, I’m over here trying to relax with my man, “Magic Mike” Jeannie E. gave him that nickname, and it fits. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have found love again and to be able to take a few days here in Portugal for a quick vacation with him!

You may have read about the fires here. We are safe but it has been smoky. They’re getting a handle on it and fortunately our group itinerary next week doesn’t include the fire areas, though we may have to take a longer bus route to the Douro…the winery/resort we’re staying in is worth the drive! As always, we are closely monitoring conditions on the ground to make sure everyone is safe and has the best experience.

We had so much fun last week! I’ve booked two weeks next year and Lifetime members (and then members) will get notified first.

There’s plenty to love about being a frequent traveler, and travel also comes with its challenges.

That’s why I’m always on the lookout for new ways to make travel better. Following are a few travel hacks I found for you this month.

Enjoy!

Last chance for a 2024 trip with NextTribe! Plus a few spots in early 2025.

1 spot left for Asheville (Oct 20-23)
2 spots for San Miguel De Allende, Mexico  (Oct 28-Nov 4)

You never know what’s hiding in there!

Also available with long sleeves.

That’s practical, isn’t it?

It’s always good to be prepared. One of our travelers to Machu Picchu carried duck tape with her and thank goodness because she used it to repair another traveler’s hiking boot! Duck tape is so handy, but who has room for a giant roll? Turns out you don’t need it. They sell “duct tape” in flat packs! You can buy it here.

This trip sells out every year. You can book at the link below.

TSA says it’s OK!

And here’s what some travelers do to take a favorite water bottle through security. Just freeze it. Depending on how far you live from the airport, it should stay frozen until you get through TSA.

What’s in your travel tray?

There’s a new trend on the socials to photograph everything in your TSA tray. Have you seen it? Check out this article from the Guardian about what they call the “digital flex” in travel.

It’s OK to get lost.

You’ve heard that expression, “all who wander are not lost.” But sometimes we are through no fault of our own. What to do? There’s a new genius app called What3Words. Hat tip to NextTribe’s TribeSocial community manager, Jennifer Miller, who posted this on our members-only network, TribeSocial.

Download the app that has this logo: What3Words

Some clever entrepreneurs mapped every 3 square meters of the entire globe (!) using 3-word combinations, and it turns out this kind of mapping is even more accurate than GPS. It’s helpful if you’re in the woods, or if you’re in an unfamiliar city and need a rescue. The app is free.

A hundred ways to pack…in one carryon.

There are lots of ways to pack and I’ve tried them all! I wrote about what works for me in Pack Like a Pro. One of our frequent travelers also likes Jen' Bosen’s 5-4-3-2-1 method. Take your pick, or tell us about your own.

Here’s how to get the most out of any trip

And finally, over on another travel company’s Facebook page they asked, “What’s the very best piece of travel advice you’ve ever received?” Our favorite comment was from a woman named Kathy Sreeves. It’s so poetic I wanted to share it with you here.

“Soften to the people, slow to the journey - be the person you want to meet.”

That, my friends, is the secret to traveling successfully—especially in a group like ours.
