Age Boldly: Turning a Homebody Husband into a Traveler

Plus, can one trip change how you see yourself?

This week Jeannie Ralston just returned from several days in New York City, where she got to catch up with some of her favorite people. Today, back in Asheville, she’s getting ready for an evening of babysitting her two grand nieces—who also qualify as favorite people.

WE LOVE NY!! Jeannie R. with from left, Lucie Frost (who runs our San Antonio NextTribe group), Cathi Hanauer (our former Answer Queen columnist) and Ellen Williams (who hosts our always popular Paris trips).

Jeannie Edmunds is driving from Denver to Durango to visit her daughter, after sitting by the bedside of her stepfather—a retired economics professor—who passed away this week. He was married to her mom for 42 years. They had lived and traveled all over the world together, so Jeannie was relieved she could make it to his bedside to thank him, and to say goodbye.

Love and loss. That seems to define this stage of life. And the human connection that extends beyond families to communities, to the world—we know how important it is. That’s why we do what we do: the writing, the community-building, and the travel.

It’s the first time she noticed his beautiful hands and long fingers. She says “He should have been a concert pianist!”

We hope you enjoy not only these stories, but all of the stories in NextTribe magazine!
