Age Boldly: The Secret Power of Friendship

Plus, learn more about your chance to be like Lucy Ricardo and get deep into wine making.

Hi there,

After 3 ½ weeks in Ireland and Scotland (poor thing!), Jeannie Ralston is home in Asheville. Just for a little while. Next week, she’ll be off to her oldest son’s wedding in Colorado. She’s equal parts excited and weepy. Her son asked her for suggestions for songs they could use for the mother-son dance. Listening to all the beautiful options is when the weepy part began.

Our perfect last day in Scotland—at a sheepdog demonstration with a passionate farmer and a traveler participating in a mock Highland Games. After a Scottish friend welcomed us to her home and fed us, she set up events so that we could get the feel of the authentic ones. Here, we substituted a mailing tube for the log in the traditional log throw. It was a hoot!

Jeannie Edmunds gets the award for toughest flier in the company. On her way to Rwanda for our Gorilla Safari trip, she missed a connection and the airline ended up putting her on another flight—but it was in a middle seat that wouldn’t recline at the back of a plane on a 14-hour flight across the Atlantic. She’s recovered now, and enjoying Kigali, which she says is a very sophisticated city. We can’t wait to share photos of the group’s gorilla and chimp encounters.

Jeanne Edmunds visiting the Roots Foundation in Kigali, where they develop the life skills of street children to get them back in school. They also have a program for women where they teach them sewing and other skills so they can buy their own machines and start a business.

This Week’s New Reads

Speaking of friendship—here’s a story we published early in NextTribe’s life, written by Suzanne Braun Levine, founding editor of Ms. Magazine. From the beginning, our mission has been to connect women our age so that we can all have full and impactful friendships in this chapter of life.

Happy trails!
