Hey there!
This week Jeannie Ralston is enjoying being home in her own bed and in a bathroom where she knows where everything is—something she does not miss about being in hotel rooms, as she writes about here.
She’s spending time catching up with Asheville friends, particularly her S&M group, which is way more tame than it sounds. S&M stands for Spite and Malice—a card game a group of travelers learned at the beach in Troncones, Mexico in 2025. The Asheville contingent gathers to play when ever possible and this week we got to welcome another traveler, Melanie Webber, who was visiting from L.A. (Full disclosure: They didn’t even play cards; they were busy tasting wine that Melanie—a master sommelier—brought with her to the gathering.
(In 2027, our Troncones beach trip is being replaced by a week at the beach in Costa Rica.)

Jeannie Edmunds was invited to lunch today by a very La-Di-Da company that owns some incredible properties all over South America. Including places you might want to go! Stay tuned.
Earlier this week she went to a screening of a documentary about an Austin rocket company called Firefly. You may have heard of them. Last year they became the first private company to land on the moon. They now have a contract to deliver construction supplies to the moon for NASA’s lunar base.
Jeannie says “To The Black” is a brutally honest portrayal of a founder and a company that struggled through multiple setbacks, but is now on its feet. “It’s very tense and very dramatic. And it’s inspiring to see such courage and determination rewarded in the end.
Even if you don’t run a business, the lessons are universal about overcoming life’s challenges. The film is set to stream later this summer on Prime and Apple+. She’s also stayed cool this week going to an IMAX documentary about horses around the world (with dramatic scenes from Mongolia!) and another one about Texas wildlife.
Enjoy the reads!

Getting close to Departure: Time to take the Plunge!
A Spectacle of Fire and Ice
For all its raw, elemental beauty, Iceland also offers refined Nordic sophistication—world-class restaurants, striking architecture, cutting-edge art, and excellent shopping. It's a place of wonderful contradictions: wild yet welcoming, remote yet remarkably progressive (hello, most gender-equal country in the world).
Come to a Cooler August in the Mountains
Did you know that in Oaxaca, the temperatures in August are in the upper 70s? NextTribe has a love affair with Mexico. Jeannie Ralston called it home for four transformative years of her life. It’s so close that it’s often taken for granted by North Americans who haven’t explored much beyond its famous beaches and tourist hot spots. But Mexico has an incredibly rich tapestry of culture, from a huge variety of soul-stirring cuisine to astonishing classical and modern art, architecture, and deep history.
The crown jewel of Mexico (other than San Miguel de Allende, of course) is Oaxaca, nestled in the country's mountainous South. Here, ancient Zapotecs and Mixtecs built great cities and temples, while Spanish colonizers later created one of Mexico's most enchanting and vibrant colonial towns—a UNESCO World Heritage site, Oaxaca City.
The Oaxaca Trip preview is Friday June 12, 6:30 pm. Please RSVP here:
